Our primary purpose
We understand from the Bible that God’s primary purpose is to spread and fill the universe with his glory by redeeming and restoring his creation, and bringing everything together under his sovereign rule.
Therefore, our primary purpose is to desire and delight in God above everyone and everything and to promote his glory everywhere (Matthew 22:37; Romans 11:36).
This purpose of glorifying and enjoying God will direct and drive all our objectives and aims, structures and systems, plans and programs, ministries and activities.
Our values
In carrying out our mission we will endeavour to value our relationships with God and people before roles, responsibilities and tasks.
1. We will value our relationship with God by loving him supremely
God wants us to love him above all others, with all that we are and have (Matthew 22:37). We will value and treasure our relationship to God as the essence and excellence of eternal and abundant life (John 17:3).
To uphold this value we will endeavour with God’s help to:
- apply our mind, heart, soul and strength to give God the best of our worship, witness and works rather than dishonour him with apathetic, half-hearted, and shoddy service
- to act with integrity and loyalty towards God and not with pretence and hypocrisy
- to acknowledge our total dependency upon him as Lord and that we need what he graciously gives to be and to do what he wants
2. We will value our relationships with others by loving them as ourselves
God wants us to love others righteously and justly in accordance with his instructions and directions for the various relationships in which we are involved (Matthew 22:39; Romans 13:8-10; 1 Corinthians 13:1-7). We will value the welfare of the others on the basis that their welfare is as important as our welfare.
To uphold this value we will endeavour with God’s help:
- to forbear, forgive, encourage, support and serve those who are disciples of Christ and to respect and love them as fellow children of God, as brothers and sisters, and to desist from acting with anger, resentment, jealousy and rivalry
- to appreciate and utilise the diversity of gifts, talents, skills and experience that God has given to the people that make up the church and to work together in peace, unity and harmony under the leadership of the Lord Jesus
- to act with patience and grace towards those who are not disciples, desiring God’s blessing even for those who oppose and despise us
To uphold these two commandments that summarise what God values most will require the ongoing, deep and thorough work of the Spirit of God to transform us from our self-centredness into Christ-likeness.
Our vision
As we carry out our mission and uphold these values, we hope by God’s grace to grow as a holy and healthy church. Our vision of the holy and healthy church we want to be is of the church:
- presenting, promoting and defending God’s truth, especially God’s gospel (1 Timothy 3:15; Matthews 28:19)
- worshipping God in spirit and truth (John 4:23)
- continually praying in the Spirit (Ephesians 6:18)
- knowing and doing God’s will according to the Scriptures (Mark 3:35; John 6:40; Matthew 18:19; Acts 20:32)
- promoting and practicing mutual love (Colossians 3:14)
- every member making their individual contribution to the church’s development (Ephesians 4:16)
